Original text (French)

English translation

« The fire in the city continued its ravages; Tverskaya was ablaze and had begun to set Nikitskaya alight; part of Pokrovka was likewise prey to the flames, when a wind rising from the north-west prodigiously quickened the progress of the fire […]. On Thursday the 5th, the wind, now blowing straight from the west and as violently as the day before, carried clouds of fire from Sretenka over all the Meshchanskaya streets and Truba, and engulfed in the same whirlwind part of Myasnitskaya […]. The unfortunate inhabitants of the Sloboda [the French quarter], pursued from place to place by the flames, were forced to take refuge in the cemeteries beyond the military hospital, where they did not even believe themselves safe. Seeing these wretched people, pallor and despair on their faces, among the tombs lit by the glow of the flames, one thought one saw so many ghosts risen from their graves. In the church of Saint-Louis everything was in the deepest consternation; all the unfortunate people who had taken refuge within its walls, bundle in hand and resigned to their fate, had come to me to receive the last absolution […]. The church of Saint-Louis, which a single spark would have sufficed to devour, was preserved by a miraculous protection of Providence. »
